Why Concrete Beats Wood and Pavers for Alaska Patios

Wood decks are popular, but they require staining or sealing every year or two and eventually rot. Pavers look attractive but shift, settle, and allow weeds to grow between joints over time. Concrete gives you a solid, connected surface that does not move, does not rot, and does not require annual treatments to stay in good shape.

In Alaska's climate, concrete also performs better because water cannot pool in gaps between stones and freeze, expanding and shifting your surface year after year. A poured concrete patio is one continuous slab with control joints built in, which means water sheds off cleanly and the structure holds its shape.

We have installed patios across Anchorage in all shapes, sizes, and finishes. From simple brushed gray slabs to stamped stone patterns and integral color work, we can build whatever works best for your space and your budget.

Finish Options for Your New Patio

We offer a range of finish options to match your style and budget:

  • Broom finish: slip-resistant, clean, and the most affordable option
  • Exposed aggregate: a textured, natural stone appearance using the concrete's own aggregate
  • Stamped concrete: patterns that mimic stone, brick, or slate at a lower cost
  • Integral color: color mixed throughout the entire slab, not just the surface
  • Acid stain or dye: rich, varied color tones applied after the pour
  • Smooth trowel finish: sleek surface ideal for covered outdoor areas

If you want the decorative look without the full price of stamped concrete, we can discuss which options give you the most visual impact for your investment.

Our Patio Installation Process

We start by grading the area, removing any existing material, and laying a compacted gravel base for drainage. Proper drainage is especially important in Anchorage where spring thaw brings a lot of surface water. A good base prevents the slab from settling or cracking due to soft spots in the soil.

Once the base is set, we form the perimeter, install reinforcement, and pour the concrete. The finishing process depends on the selected texture. Control joints are cut at calculated intervals to give the concrete planned places to crack if movement does occur, keeping the surface looking clean.

We also install concrete driveways and can pair a new driveway with a patio pour on the same visit to reduce mobilization costs. Contact us for a free on-site estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a concrete patio survive Anchorage winters?
Yes, when it is built the right way. We use air-entrained concrete mixes and proper joint spacing to handle Alaska's freeze-thaw cycles. A correctly installed concrete patio in Anchorage will last 30 years or more with minimal maintenance.
How much does a concrete patio cost in Anchorage?
Basic concrete patio installation in Anchorage typically runs between $8 and $14 per square foot depending on size, shape, access, and finish options. Stamped or colored concrete adds to the cost but significantly improves the appearance.
How long does concrete patio installation take?
Most residential patio pours are done in one day. You can walk on the surface within 24 to 48 hours. We recommend waiting at least 7 days before placing heavy furniture, and the concrete reaches full design strength at 28 days.
